DR. MARIA LUISA CESAR Dr. Maria Luisa Cesar, 2003 PAWA's Woman of the Year, is married to the President of the Azores, Carlos Manuel Cesar. They have one son, Francisco, an economics student at the Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa. Carlos Manuel Cesar was first elected to the presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores in 1996, and was reelected in October, 2000. Dr. Maria Luisa Cesar holds a Bachelor's Degree in History and a Doctorate in Library Science and Archival Studies. Besides fulfilling her duties as the First Lady of the Azores, she pursues her own career as librarian and archivist at the Biblioteca Publica e Arquivo da Ponta Delgada. Dr. Luisa Cesar is involved in the Rede Nacional de Bibliotecas Publicas - National Network of Public Libraries in continental Portugal and the Azores. Its objective is to finance the development and modernization of libraries and library services. PAWA applauds Dr. Maria Luisa Cesar for fulfilling with great distinction her state and professional responsibilities, as well as those of wife and mother. She is chairwoman of the Sao Miguel Food Pantry, active in health care issues, and was instrumental in providing humanitarian aid to the people of East Timor. We admire her professional role as well as her charitable contributions and volunteer service to those less fortunate.
